The Origins of Leap Year
You might wonder why we recognize February 29th only once every four years. Our use of the Gregorian calendar requires us to add an extra day every four years. Pope Gregory XIII introduced the Gregorian calendar in 1582. And, in 1751, the United Kingdom declared in an Act of Parliament that England and its colonies would use this style of calendar.
With the conversion to the Gregorian calendar, it required us to add an extra day every four years. This allows our calendar to stay in alignment with the Earth’s revolutions around the sun. If we did not adjust our calendar this way, we would lose about six hours a year. Now, adjust this over one hundred years and we would lose about 24 days, so it is absolutely necessary to make the correction.

Count yourself in a select group if you are born on February 29th. It is estimated there are only about 187,000 people born on Leap Day in the United States and about four million people worldwide so you really due belong to a select club.
