Celebrate Nature with Plant a Flower Day on March 12

We can almost hear the birds chirping and ringing in spring, so get a head start this year by celebrating Plant a Flower Day this March 12th. Officially, spring equinox does not begin until March 20, but don’t let that stop you from embracing the joys of the season.

Historically, spring has signified rebirth and an awakening from a long winter’s slumber to unleash the rays of sun and welcome the glorious colors of the season.

A Time like No Other

The origins of Plant a Flower Day are a mystery. There seems to be no clear cut reason given for the creation of this special day. Even without a history, the meaning behind Plant a Flower Day could not be clearer. The joys of spring and the beauty of flowers and plants can bring a smile to almost anyone’s face.

The thought of tenderly fertilizing and watering a plant and then watching it peek out and break ground to reveal the stunning hardiness and beauty of its leaves and stems brings a sense of joy and pride to many people. So, the idea that someone thought of creating Plant a Flower Day is no mystery. It is simply discovering and embracing the joys of gardening.

So Many Ways to Celebrate

Plant a Flower gives you the opportunity to embrace your inner gardener and create a small or large garden or flower box. There are multiple ways to honor this special day. Here are a few tips:

  • If you live in an apartment or condominium and have a small balcony where you can decorate and display pots, head to your local hardware store and purchase potting soil, plant fertilizer, a pot with good drainage, and a selection of flowers and plants. Spend the afternoon planting and tending to your new flowers and plants. Choose a sunny location and water to keep the soil moist without letting the roots sit in water.
  • Consider adding flower boxes under your front windows. You can mix plants with flowers for an eye-popping display of color. Plants and ferns, such as allysum, will add interest when mixed with petunias and Mexican heather for a wide range of colors.
  • Get the girls together for an afternoon of fun and plan a planting party to celebrate Plant a Flower Day. Head to the local hardware store and pick-up supplies, and then add in some light sandwiches and soft drinks for an afternoon of gardening and lunch.
