The Gift of Friendship

Over the summer months, our blog posts have covered many lesser known holidays. We have covered everything from hot dog to ice cream day, and now we are going to talk about friendship day, including the holiday and the history surrounding it.

What is friendship? At Carithers Flowers, we believe that friendship involves many things — being there for the people you care about, standing up for them, and sometimes putting them first even over yourself. If you have done or do these things, we believe you truly are a good friend and it’s important to remember to show just how important your friends are to you, too.

The History of Friendship Day

While some national holidays are relatively new, this one is not. Sure, it’s under a hundred years old, but that is still old. Congress declared National Friendship Day to be on the first Sunday in August way back when in 1935. While some people ignore it, or maybe just don’t know about it, at Carithers, we want to encourage you to celebrate it and do something special for your friends.

Do you remember as a child how all the kids’ shows promoted friendship and putting others before yourself? Chances are you remember or know of Winnie the Pooh, that friendly silly bear that at some point all children have enjoyed. In 1997, Winnie the Pooh was even named as the World’s Ambassador of Friendship — after all, he has done a very good job of showing us what true friends do for each other.

Friending a Friend

While it may not seem realistic or even feasible in the current economy to celebrate friendship with every friend you have on the planet or on your Facebook list, you can still find some ways to celebrate Friendship Day.

If you have a best friend, treat them to something special. You could take them out to lunch or buy flowers or a gift basket. They may not know the holiday so as with all gift giving don’t expect to necessarily get something in return, but know that the greatest gift in return is the smile on their face.

If you want to do something to include all or a majority of your friends, we have something to help. Whether you organize a little event or just have a house party, what better to accommodate everyone’s sweet tooth than one of our signature Mrs. Fields cookie gift baskets? For flowers, cookies, and more gifts for Friendship Day and beyond, be sure to check us out today and have a great Friendship Day!
