To continually be reminded of just how special these flowers are, National Wildflower Week was created by the American Wildflower Society in 1988. Since then, it has been celebrated each May as a way to remember that we must protect our precious natural resources and take care of wildflowers so that future generations will be able to enjoy them.
What are Wildflowers?
Wildflowers are typically defined as any flower that grows in the wild without being intentionally planted. Although you sometimes can buy seed packets that state that they are wildflowers, these are typically mixed species or some type of hybrid. It is often a catch-all term for flowers that may not be typically found in a specific area but have been found in the wild.
There is a long list of wildflowers listed just for the Georgia area. If you are interested in finding out more about wildflowers found in our area, here is an interesting web site that provides pictures and information about wildflowers in Georgia.
You can create a wildflower garden at home using some of the seed packets that offer these flowers. There are many advantages to including wildflowers in your garden. If you are in a more urban setting or climate that would otherwise need a lot of water for your garden, then wildflowers are a good alternative as they are hardy and can withstand the urban environment, growing just about anywhere. These low-maintenance flowers also may bloom more than once a year, giving your garden more color for a longer period of time.
