A Lasting Impression

Our design team began by selecting colors that would complement Andrea’s selection of bridesmaids’ dresses and her own gown. She had chosen a slick, strapless knee length dress for the bridesmaids in a stunning shade of red. Each dress was adorned with pleats and a gathered sash around the waist.  We added to this lovely design with a simple hand-tied bouquet of varying shades of pink and light red roses. Woven within the bouquets are pink and yellow calla lilies and greenery that offered a counterbalance to the striking shades of pink and red roses.

The groom wore a stunning white calla lily in his boutonniere while his groomsmen wore a deep pink and yellow calla lily boutonniere that complemented and coordinated with the bridesmaids’ bouquets. The bride had chosen a classic strapless wedding gown with an elegant veil. To accent this timeless design, we put together a hand-tied bouquet in bridal white. This stunning bouquet features white and blush colored roses with white calla lilies and a range of other beautiful flowers. Delicate white satin was used to wrap the stems.

A Party to Remember

Andrea was looking for classic and lovely centerpieces as well as an unexpected use of flowers. Her wedding cake provided our design team with the perfect opportunity to put an unusual twist to a traditional use of roses. Her wedding cake was a white four-tiered box and round cake with pearl button appliqué. We gathered roses in varying shades of red and pink and fashioned them atop her wedding cake for her topper. In addition, red and pink roses were placed in front of the wedding cake to highlight and contrast with the white design scheme of the cake.

Andrea’s table centerpieces were a simple design of single roses in clear vases with pebbles in the bottom. For the bride and groom’s wedding table, a timeless setting was created with a grouping of roses paired with a range of other complementing flowers. These elegant centerpieces provided just the right touch of simplicity.

Carnation’s History

The carnation enjoys a varied and storied history. Its history began over 2,000 years ago when it began being cultivated in Europe and Asia. As the story goes, the ancient Greeks used carnations as floral garlands for their ceremonial events.

Thus, carnations derived their common name from the word, “coronation,” or “corone.” The carnation received its botanical name from the Greek botanist Theophrastus who named it “Dianthus,” which means “flower of the Gods.” Carnations have long been associated with St. Patrick’s Day, and green carnations have graced the boutonnieres of many Irish lapels during this March 17^th celebration.

Mother’s Day

Carnations hold the rank of being the official flower of Mother’s Day. The founder of Mother’s Day, Anna Marie Jarvis, designated the carnation as the official flower in tribute to her own mother. She lobbied for an official recognition of Mother’s Day and, in 1907, she sent 500 white carnations to the mothers in her own mother’s parish church. Her efforts paid off and, in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson declared Mother’s Day an official holiday.  

State and National Flower

Carnations enjoy the status of being a state as well as national flower. The state of Ohio, in 1904, adopted the red carnation as its official state flower. This was to honor President William McKinley, a native of Ohio and frequent wearer of a red carnation on his lapel. Spain also designated the carnation as its national flower.

Carnation Care

Carnations come in over 300 species, and you can found them in colors, ranging from white, pink, green and red to almost everything in-between except blue. Carnations are a hardy species and do well when exposed to full sunlight.

Well-drained soil is a must, and they should never be allowed to sit in water. You can expect your carnation bloom to last several weeks. They are a fragrant flower and will fill a room with their distinctive aroma.

The History of National Hugging Day

The origins of National Hugging Day rest with Reverend Keith Zaborney. In 1986, he chose January 21^st as a day to embrace loved ones and show them how much they mean to you. The date was selected because it lies halfway between Christmas and Valentine’s Day. Zaborney believed most people were at an emotional low during this point and could use some extra love. National Hugging Day grew in popularity and has quickly spread throughout the world. Today, this international recognized celebration continues to grow in popularity.
